Before Your First Session

👕 What to Wear

Comfort and warmth are key when choosing your skating outfit:

  • Wear layers that you can remove as you warm up from activity
  • Choose flexible clothing that allows full range of movement
  • Avoid jeans or restrictive clothing that limits bending at the knees
  • Long sleeves and long trousers protect you if you fall
  • Bring gloves to protect your hands and keep them warm
  • Wear thick socks but not too many layers which can affect skate fit
  • Tie back long hair to keep it out of your face

👜 Equipment Essentials

Here's what you need for your skating session:

  • Ice Skates: Available for hire at the facility or bring your own if you have them
  • Gloves: Essential for warmth and protection
  • Helmet: Recommended for children and first-time skaters
  • Water Bottle: Stay hydrated during your session
  • Small Bag: For storing personal items while you skate

Safety First

Proper Skate Fit

Skates should fit snugly without being painfully tight. Your heel should not lift when you stand. Laces should be tight around the ankle for support but looser at the toes for comfort. Take time to ensure proper fit before stepping on the ice.

Ice Rink Rules

Always skate in the same direction as other skaters. Stay aware of your surroundings. Never sit or kneel on the ice. Listen to staff instructions. If you fall, get up quickly to avoid being skated into. Use the barriers for support when needed.

Falling Safely

Falls are a normal part of learning. If you feel yourself falling, try to bend your knees and fall to the side. Keep your hands close to your body or use them to break your fall gently. Never put your hands flat on the ice as fingers can be skated over.

Know Your Limits

Take breaks when you feel tired. Don't try advanced moves until you've mastered basics. Listen to your body and rest if something hurts. Progress at your own pace without comparing yourself to others.

Your First Steps on Ice

1

Getting On the Ice

Hold the barrier and step carefully onto the ice. Keep your weight centered over your skates. Take a moment to feel the ice surface and adjust your balance before moving.

2

Standing Position

Bend your knees slightly and keep your back straight. Your arms should be out to the sides for balance. Look ahead, not down at your feet. This posture is fundamental to all skating movements.

3

First Movements

Start by marching in place to get used to the feeling. Then try small steps forward, keeping your knees bent. Push gently with one foot while gliding on the other. Don't try to go fast initially.

4

Learning to Stop

The snowplow stop is easiest for beginners. Push your heels out and toes in to form a V shape while bending your knees. Apply gentle pressure to slow down. Practice this frequently.

Top Tips for Success

🌟 Be Patient With Yourself

Learning to skate takes time. You won't be perfect in your first session, and that's completely normal. Celebrate small achievements and don't get discouraged by mistakes. Every fall teaches you something valuable.

💪 Strengthen Your Core

Good core strength helps with balance on ice. Off-ice exercises like planks, squats, and balance work will improve your skating. Even simple activities like standing on one leg at home can help.

🕑 Practice Regularly

Consistency is more important than long sessions. Skating once or twice a week for 30-45 minutes will yield better results than occasional longer sessions. Your muscle memory develops through repetition.

💬 Ask Questions

Our coaches are here to help. Never hesitate to ask for clarification or additional guidance. If something doesn't feel right or you're unsure about a technique, speak up. There are no silly questions in skating.

🙌 Watch Others

Observing more experienced skaters can help you understand techniques. Watch how they position their bodies, transfer weight, and move across the ice. Visual learning is a powerful tool.

🙂 Enjoy the Journey

Focus on fun rather than perfection. Skating should be enjoyable. Make friends, celebrate progress, and appreciate each session. A positive mindset accelerates learning.

What to Expect in Your First Few Sessions

Session 1-2

You'll focus on getting comfortable standing and moving on ice. Expect to feel wobbly and use the barriers frequently. You'll practice basic forward movement and simple stopping. Falls are likely and normal.

Session 3-5

You'll start to feel more stable and confident. Forward skating becomes smoother. You'll work on stopping more reliably and beginning to turn. You might venture away from the barriers for longer periods.

Session 6-10

Your balance improves significantly. You'll refine technique and increase speed comfortably. Introduction to backward skating and simple turns. You'll start to feel like a proper skater.

Beyond Session 10

You'll have solid fundamental skills. Ready to explore more advanced techniques like crossovers, better edge control, and perhaps simple spins. Your confidence will be high and skating feels natural.
